 Pizzelle are an ancient, traditional Italian cookie, originated from the people of the Abruzzi region of Italy. The cookies with the distinctive shape were originally manufactured on cast iron grills over a high heat. The process to make a single cookie was long and tedious. Fortunately all of us without the knowledge, time, or equipment to prepare them conventionally are these days able to enjoy this little piece of culinary art due to the ingenuity of a Canadian manufacturer.
In 1985, NuStef Foods Limited introduced this time-honored tradition to Canada, overcoming the obstacle of producing multiple Pizzelle at a time. Since then NuStef Foods has grown substantially, so much in fact that people as far away as Taiwan, New Zealand, and Mexico as well as our neighbors in the United States, are enjoying these superb unique cookies daily.
Nustef Foods Limited is one of the few companies in Canada that ship products back to their original country of heritage - even Italians in Italy think that Pizzelle cookies made in Canada by Nustef are better than their locally made ones.
The Company has recently decided to improve on its web presence and establish itself as a quick and secure e-retailer of Pizzelle cookies and related products, in addition to providing advanced tools for its wholesale-base around the world.
In search for a new creative design and layout that would immediately tell the Pizzelle story to a web visitor, COMMbits involved in the project development team one of its most experienced creative graphic designers, Kimberly Weir, a seasoned designer with an enviable track record of high profile achievements. Through her design, Kimberly showcases the multiple ways Pizzelle cookies may be used, while staying in touch with the Italian cookie’s distinctive color and shape.
The project was split in two phases early-on: The design of the showcase piece and the implementation of the e-commerce-enabled on-line store with advanced shopping cart functionality. The former phase/website portion is where the Pizzelle Italian cookie is showcased, along with suggested recipes. This part also includes dynamic components for the display and management of interactive information such as customer testimonials, News Management and randomized content. All content is directly managed at the website owner’s side using the successful COMMbits DOME Website Content Management System. The e-store is where Nustef’s products can be purchased on-line using secure credit card transactions.
 In order to maintain consistency across the website the COMMbits team has created a graphical banner with a global navigational menu and positioned it on every page within the site, but created two separate dynamic navigational structures for the showcase portion and the e-store respectively. This methodology ensures that the shoppers’ experience is enhanced with the use of shopping-related menu options, while the experience of a user visiting the showcase portion of the site is guided by menu options related to informational content about the Italian Cookies and their history.
