 Here at COMMbits we are accustomed to challenging assignments. They help us keep at the forefront of technology and they present an excellent opportunity for innovation. When we were initially approached by Silverbrook Homes we knew that their requirements would be challenging to meet in a cost-effective manner.
The small-to-midsize quality-homes builder required a website to showcase multiple new construction sites – communities, each with its own site structure and consistent navigational menu. Photographic and other multimedia material would be displayed within minimum web site real estate (for maximizing the effect using a minimum number of clicks), and a global navigational system was requested to provide easy navigation from- and to- any sub-site with the minimum possible number of mouse clicks. To top it all up, the client required self-maintained content and the ability to quickly and easily add new sections within any of the sub-sites, while keeping the navigational bars on all web site pages accurate and up-to-date.
COMMbits came to the rescue with an innovative, custom application – written in PHP – that drives the “guts” of this web site including all navigational structures and branding for each sub-site separately, while at the same time providing common graphical and functional elements for sharing across all web pages.
The end-result is a branded website with a custom look ‘n feel that allows both vertical and horizontal navigation. Each sub-section (construction site – community) “lives” within its own sub-structure and carries with it all its “children” web pages, which all share the same brand and navigational structures, unique for the parent sub-section.
The visitor can quickly switch between construction sites using the horizontal navigational bar, i.e. Ravines of Barbertown, Broadway Grande and Gamble Glen. Upon clicking on any of these sub-sites, the vertical navigational bar changes to reflect the sections within this sub-section. The brand (i.e. graphical banner at the top) also changes and stays consistent across all pages within a specific sub-site. No matter which “depth” a visitor is browsing at, switching construction sites is a click away.
The custom-developed navigational system has been integrated with the legendary COMMbits DOME Website Content Management System, which allows website owners to easily maintain the content on their web pages, without running the risk of damaging essential underlying code.
We have also integrated existing technologies for slideshow presentations, which quickly tell a story about a specific construction site. Furthermore, we have built functionality to allow the web site owners full control over the photos that participate in any particular slideshow.
Other integrated components include the COMMbits News Manager – which allows web site owners to easily post news about their business and industry, or any other articles including multimedia, and the COMMbits web-to-email gateway, a feature available on the COMMbits Business Hosting environment. In addition, visitors are able to view a printable version of all content pages. Web page printing is guaranteed to work on any printer, with any margin settings, without cropping the content.
