Full Story:
COMMbits launched today an in-house developed system to facilitate on-line registrations for a skin cancer awareness event in Edmonton, Alberta.
Run from the Sun is an event to raise funds and awareness for skin cancer. 100% of the pledge money raised will be going to the Alberta Cancer Foundation's Mary Johnston Melanoma fund, which specializes in skin cancer research initiatives. The government of Alberta - through its Access to the Future endowment - will match the money raised dollar for dollar. The event will take place on June 4, 2006 at Rundle Park in Edmonton, Alberta.
Some quick facts about Melanoma:
- The incidence of malignant melanoma is increasing faster than that of any other cancer.
- In North America, the percentage of people who develop melanoma has more than doubled in the past 30 years.
- For those patients, who either present with or develop advanced stage disease, the prognosis is poor because treatment options are limited and, in the large majority of patients, ineffective.
- Despite this, the disease has been largely overlooked by both academia and the pharmaceutical industry.
The Organizers approached COMMbits in search for event sponsors - particularly for a Company to help streamline the on-line registration procedure. True to its commitment for supporting and working with non-profit Organizations (see also this news post) COMMbits gladly accepted to get involved and donated its time, knowledge and experience in the areas of e-commerce and on-line payment systems. The end result is an on-line registration system with real-time credit card authorization and all required back-end database structures, that simplify the Organizers' procedures during registration.
The web site for the event is at www.runfromthesun.ca.
COMMbits highly encourages all its clients, friends and general audiences visiting its public web site - especially those close to Edmonton - to help raise awareness about skin cancer by supporting the initiatives of the Organizers and participating at the June 4, 2006 event.
